Habitat for Humanity

I hadn't really heard about the program "Habitat for Humanity" until yesterday. I was able to spend the morning with other people in the design community doing a little bit to help.

Habitat for Humanity is a program that helps families who are unable to purchase homes. Almost all the labor and materials are donated. The family is required to put in 'sweat equity' by helping build and then are given a smaller house payment that usual that is affordable to them. All the money they pay goes back into the Habitat fund to help continue to build more houses. Cool, huh! The family has four children. We were able to meet the father. He was really nice and a hard worker.

We were told beforehand that we would be roofing and framing!?! Yeah, that's a GREAT idea for amateurs! Well, the weather has slowed them down so they were planning on having us frame, but it was snowing and raining in the morning so they had us pick up rocks. :)

I can't believe how rocky the soil is down there!

At first we used buckets and hauled them to a dumpster and poured them in. At this point they told us we had better stop!

So we started making another pile and ended up with this:

And some pics of the process:

Shannon got sick of rocks and built a porch instead. :) Here she is with her nail gun with rockin' kick-back!

The rain did stop after a bit so they told us they were ready for us to put up a wall that they had previously built. First though, we needed to sweep off all the wood because it was SO wet. We had someone on the second story sweeping all of that off while we kept sweeping the main floor. It was really wet! You can see a bunch of drips coming through the ceiling in the puddle.

A bunch of us climbed up and helped lift the wall. I honestly was really scared about the whole deal. I can't believe the wall didn't slip and fall off the house.

And then we held it there with all our might while they stabilized it and nailed it together. Who the heck do they think we are?!

It was a really fun experience. I love building things and I love experiences out of the norm. Good times!

Cool...I've always wanted to get involved with Habitat for Humanity, just have never found the right time in my life to do it. Way to go! I always kind of did think it was crazy for amatuers to build a house, but it seems to work out.
